Piketberg, Western Cape, South Africa
Voyager Boutique Homestead Retreat
The Voyager Boutique Homestead Retreat brings atavistic rural regeneration to life in Piketberg.

Located at the edge of town on the traditional "main road" (Voortrekker Street) this radical alteration to an existing 1880's farmhouse breathes new life into the farming town and creates a much-needed social hub for Piketberg. Built on the principles of farm-to-table, agritourism and providing authentic experiences for tourists and locals alike, the new Voyager is a distination unlike any other in South Africa.

A modern wrap-around veranda attenuates the harsh almost desert climate of Piketberg.

The original building, like many in the Western Cape is on the street edge, which is activated with a new public entrance and guest seating areas facing the mountain.

A bathing terrace with four Victorian baths was added to the existing "karoo style" above ground swimming pool.

Hand-cut pearlescent quartzite slasto moves between indoors and outdoors uniting old and new spaces.

Three different design epochs (1880:1930:1970) that exemplify typical South African farmhouse styles, exist coterminously in the boutique hotel. Rushka the ginger cat is quite at home in the terra cotta and copper interior.

The reading room features a bold new fireplace combining pomo stripes and an Edwardian anthracite fireplace.

The site is handled as two distinct indigenous biomes - Western Cape vs Eastern Cape

The wrap-around veranda is evocative of crisp Palm Springs modernism in California.

The interiors evoke the richness of tropical modernism with warm natural materials.
